1630 Naramata Road
Award-winning home winemaker Dick Lancaster absorbed an interest in wine from his father, a former Air Canada food services director. Now chief financial officer for an industrial minerals company near Vancouver, Lancaster was looking for a family retreat when he and his wife bought a Naramata Bench property in 2000, then planted modest plots of gewürztraminer and schönburger. Lancaster has added merlot, cabernet sauvignon and pinot gris. After selling grapes for several years, the Lancasters built an efficient, 3,200-square-foot gravity-flow winery between the vineyard and Naramata Road. The efficient design affords tasting room visitors views of virtually the entire processing area. The winery is named for the indigenous spider which is highly venomous, but also exceedingly shy.
