The Deol family, who came to Canada from the Punjab in 1980, spent most of their first decade here working for leading Okanagan vineyards. When the blazing Okanagan sun created health problems for some family members, they bought a former dairy farm in the more moderate Cowichan Valley in 1999, planting vines the following year (primarily gamay, maréchal foch, pinot gris and chardonnay). After selling grapes to other wineries for several years, in 2007, the Deols turned a sturdy, red barn into a winery and renovated a century-old house into a tasting room. They continue to sell grapes, although the very cold winter of 2008-09 reduced grape production by killing buds and even some vines.
