Andrew Peller Ltd. (formerly Andrés Wines), the largest Canadian-owned wine producer, was founded in 1961 with a winery in the Vancouver suburb of Port Moody. Since the 1990s, most of its VQA wines have been released under the Peller label, the name of the family which launched the winery. In May 2005, the company acquired Calona Vineyards. Subsequently, the Port Moody winery closed and production was moved to the Calona winery in downtown Kelowna. Stephanie Leinemann, a rising star among Calona's winemakers, has been put in charge of making the Peller VQA wines. In the last two years, Peller has moved aggressively to secure its viticultural base. The company has planted 121.4 hectares of vines on a plot leased at Covert Farms near Oliver, it has acquired 100 percent of the 28.3-hectare Rocky Ridge Vineyard in the Similkameen by buying a partner's half interest and it has contracted grapes from a similar-sized vineyard nearby.
