Vista D'oro Farms Winery

20856 4th Avenue
Langley, BC

With Patrick Murphy being a veteran home winemaker, this winery seems a natural extension of the culinary agritourism that has established the reputation of Vista D'oro Farms. The Murphys bought this Langley property in 1997 in a career change from the corporate world (both had worked for Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers). The farm now produces heirloom tomatoes and other vegetables; Patrick also crafts custom-designed furniture. After culinary training, in 2002, Lee launched a growing series of artisanal preserves for sale at the farm market and beyond. In 2008, they planted maréchal foch, ortega, siegerrebe, schönburger and pinot gris (totalling 1.4 hectares of vines). To date, their wines are made with grapes from the Okanagan. D'oro, their fortified walnut wine, is unique among British Columbia wines. It is based on an old French recipe in which green walnuts are picked on Bastille Day and macerated in brandy. The flavour recalls a tawny port. After that wine is pressed off, the walnut husks are soaked in pinot noir, producing the sherry-like Pinot Noix. Patrick is now growing pears in bottles on his pear trees for the production of a Canadian version of Poire William eau de vie.
