Working Horse Winery and Vineyards

5266 Coldham Rd.
Peachland, BC

The Hainle name is legend in Canadian winemaking. The late Walter Hainle is credited with making Canada's first commercial icewine in 1978. Tilman, his son, carries on this and other Hainle traditions. The winery opened with several vintages of icewine, as well as table wines, including the Rare Breeds White made from six varieties from an estate vineyard planted in 1976. The Hainle family winery, sold several years ago, was British Columbia's first organic producer. At the new Working Horse Winery, Tilman and Sara Norman are taking this green ethic a step further by cultivating the vineyard with a team of Suffolk Punch horses. Developed in Britain in the 16th century, this is one of the oldest breeds of English heavy draught horses, but is now rare because of farm mechanization. Other original farm touches here include a flock of Araucana chickens, a South American breed that lays blue eggs.
